You think we are going to get a viable 3rd party candidate in 2012?

If we did it would split votes depending on the political alignment of the candidate. A leftist would split the Democrat vote(example, if Hillary decided to run) but a rightist would split the Republican vote. It wouldn't hurt the other party and would allow for an easy victory.
